Glovo, the Spanish delivery app owned by Germany’s Delivery Hero, has committed to comply with Spain’s Riders Law, which represents a substantial shift in its labor standards. The company said it will hire some 15,000 riders, the majority of whom were previously designated as self-employed contractors.

Compliance with Spain’s labor reforms.

In 2021, Spain passed a labor reform that classified gig economy workers, such as delivery app riders, as employees rather than independent contractors. Despite this, Glovo continued to operate with several riders working as subcontractors, attempting to skirt the legal obligation. However, the corporation has decided to follow the law, noting that it wants to “avoid further legal uncertainties.”

The cost of compliance

Glovo’s initiative to hire 15,000 couriers has financial ramifications. The corporation warned that this adjustment would reduce its earnings by €100 million. This change reflects the costs of hiring full-time personnel and complying with Spanish labor standards.

Legal Challenges and Fines

Glovo has received many fines for labor violations stemming from its failure to recognize riders as employees prior to the 2021 reform. Additionally, CEO Oscar Pierre is scheduled to appear in court this week for potential violations of the Riders Law. The corporation is also facing a €295 million lawsuit from competitor Just Eat due to competition issues.

Statement from the Spanish Labour Minister

Spanish labor minister Yolanda Díaz responded on Glovo’s shift, noting that the corporation previously operated illegally. She stressed that corporations could no longer avoid labor standards, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting gig economy workers’ rights.

Influence on the Delivery App Market

Glovo’s action reflects a broader trend in the gig economy, in which delivery apps are under increasing pressure to provide better working conditions for their employees. As other delivery apps examine how Glovo responds to these restrictions, it may influence future industry developments, particularly in nations with similar labor reforms.
In conclusion, Glovo’s commitment to comply with Spain’s Riders Law is a watershed event for the company and the gig economy. By engaging thousands of couriers, Glovo is complying with labor standards while incurring financial costs.

Apple plans to improve Siri by incorporating powerful AI capabilities, making the assistant more conversational and adaptable. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the initiative, known as “LLM Siri,” will use Apple’s AI models to provide natural, human-like interactions, comparable to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

What can be expected from LLM Siri?

Siri, facilitated by artificial intelligence, will tackle more difficult tasks, improving its functionality across all Apple devices. Key enhancements include:

  1. Advanced Task Handling: Siri will communicate with third-party apps via enhanced App Intents.
  2. Text Summarization and Writing: Apple Intelligence will allow Siri to easily summarize and generate text.
  3. Screen Context Understanding: Siri can read on-screen content and do contextual actions within apps. Apple intends to disclose these improvements as early as 2024, with a complete revamp due in spring 2026.

How does LLM Siri differ from ChatGPT?

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software, Craig Federighi, highlighted the unique purposes of Siri and ChatGPT:
1. ChatGPT’s Strengths: Ideal for addressing tough queries or producing extensive information.
2. Siri’s Usability: Siri is designed for local, device-specific operations like as opening apps, sending texts, and managing smart devices.
Federighi noted that, while both systems are growing, Siri remains focused on providing immediate, local service.

Apple’s eventual AI deployment

Apple has taken a cautious stance toward AI integration. Siri recently got ChatGPT integration in the iOS 18.2 beta, which is a huge step forward. Upcoming Siri features include:

  1. Executing actions based on the screen context.
  2. Better comprehension and execution of app commands.

Conclusion: AI’s Role in Siri’s Future

Apple’s AI investment is making Siri a more capable assistant, competing with industry leaders such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Siri’s growth strives to improve user experience throughout the Apple ecosystem while remaining focused on practical, device-centered tasks. This combination of smart AI and local capabilities prepares Siri to make a strong comeback in the digital assistant competition.

Amazon recently announced an extra $4 billion investment in Anthropic, a well-known artificial intelligence (AI) business created by former OpenAI officials. This investment brings Amazon’s commitment to $8 billion, strengthening its long-term ambition to compete in the fast-expanding AI Startup. Despite the significant investment, Amazon will remain Anthropic’s minority shareholder, according to the business.

Amazon’s involvement in Anthropic’s AI development

Anthropic, the business behind the Claude chatbot and advanced AI models, will now benefit from Amazon’s cloud infrastructure, as Amazon Web Services (AWS) has become Anthropic’s primary cloud and training partner. In this new phase, Anthropic will employ AWS’s Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its most powerful AI models, greatly advancing the company’s capabilities.

Strategic collaboration for AI innovation.

The collaboration with Amazon and Anthropic also gives AWS customers early access to upcoming Anthropic capabilities, such as the opportunity to fine-tune the Claude AI using their own data. This one-of-a-kind solution places AWS as a crucial player in the competitive AI arms race. Alongside tech behemoths such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. The AI sector is predicted to generate more than $1 trillion in sales over the next decade, making these investments critical for staying competitive.

Anthropic’s AI Milestones and Plans for the Future

This increased funding follows Anthropic’s important achievement in AI. The business recently introduced its “Computer Use” function, which enables its AI models to interact with computers, accomplish tasks, and explore websites in a manner comparable to human behavior. Asana, Canva, and Notion have already received early access to this platform, demonstrating its potential across industries.
Anthropic also announced Claude Enterprise in September 2023, aimed at businesses wishing to use advanced AI capabilities. Meanwhile, Claude 3.5 Sonnet was released in June as the company’s most powerful model to date.

Competition from OpenAI and the Developing AI Industry

Amazon’s big investment in Anthropic demonstrates its commitment to competing with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and other companies in the generative AI sector. Amazon, like Microsoft, which has invested extensively in OpenAI, intends to remain competitive in a fast-developing field.
In addition to Amazon’s investment, Google made news earlier this year with a $2 billion commitment to Anthropic, demonstrating the expanding interest in artificial intelligence. This strategic move underlines the struggle for AI innovation dominance, with Amazon’s $4 billion investment being a big step forward in the competition with OpenAI.

Conclusion: Amazon and Anthropic Lead the AI Revolution.

With its recent investment in Anthropic, Amazon is poised to play an important role in the development of AI, alongside tech titans such as OpenAI and Google. As AI evolves, Amazon’s partnership with Anthropic assures that the company remains a crucial player in developing the next generation of artificial intelligence. The alliance not only increases Anthropic’s capabilities but also opens up new avenues for organizations and developers to leverage the potential of AI.

A new app on the block called Screenable helps parents prepare their children to use technology by turning Apple devices kid-ready.

There are several modes that parents can choose from when setting up Screenable on their child’s device. For instance, when parents choose the Dumb Phone mode, the child’s device instantly turns into a ‘classic flip phone’. Features are limited in this app with only FaceTime, location sharing, Phone and some select apps. The company has stated that its mode is an excellent alternative to the Apple Watch. With Screen Trainer, the child’s self-control is contained. Features such as Overtime let children stay within their daily time limits. Parents will still be notified about their child’s activities.

Parents can also remove certain apps such as the App Store, camera, internet and more. This removes any distractions available on the child’s phone until the child is ready. Furthermore, the parents can also receive guidance and parental advice every step of the way. All of the advice provided is backed up with research and is up-to-date with current parenting styles and challenges.

Screenable: How to use this new app

To start using Screenable, the parent app must first be installed and the family profile must be set up. After which, parents can then install the kid version of the app on their child’s iPhone or iPad. Users can then choose a mode which instantly turns the child’s device into a media player, dumb phone and so on. Parents can also get notified and reports. They can also update the app settings remotely.

The startup was founded by Stevie Clifton and Tom Chilfton along with their wives, Hannah Kwon and Sarlet Chilfton. Certain modes on the app such as Dumb Phone are available for free, while other modes can be accessed for 7$ per month.

Manifest is an AI startup app founded by Amy Wu, aimed at easing the loneliness epidemic. While the app does not intend to replace mental health facilities and services, it wants its users to feel less alone.

When users open this wellness app, they can tap on the orb in the middle of the screen. Tapping or holding on to the orB allows them to talk to the AI. The app then mimics the user’s speech patterns and provides affirmations to whatever the user typed out. The users can then use these affirmations as audio for meditation purposes.

Image Credits: Screenshot From Manifest App

Wu says that Manifest works as a wellness app because it makes wellness easy and convenient. Using technology when someone is not in the best place might not be the best place to start but it is a reality that most people go through. People scroll through their phones just to escape so why not use a wellness app while on the phone?

Manifest: More features of this app

This startup launched earlier this year and it has since generated over 18 million manifestations on the platform. Since it’s a fairly new startup, the company has not raised around $3.4 million through a seed stage.

Wu has stated that the app has a few safeguards to help prevent something dangerous from happening. For instance, the app’s AI directs users to a suicide hotline if the user mentions or talks about self-harm. However, the app has certain topics that it refuses to talk about with the users.

The app goes through the usual challenges that come with being a mental health app since it has no actual medical backing behind the app. Furthermore, Wu says that she does not think people should be going to Manifest in the case of dire medical attention. However, due to the inaccessibility of medical care, young people often turn to these apps.

Opera is rolling out a new Tab Commands feature that lets users manage their tabs by simply talking with Opera’s browser AI, Aria. This AI-powered feature enables users to pin, group, close, and bookmark tabs.

The users can enable Aria by pressing the Ctrl+/ or Cmd+/ and then write in their requests for Aria to act on. For instance, if a user wants Aria to close their YouTube tabs, then the users can type “Close YouTube tabs”, which Aria effectively closes their tabs. Aria can also help users organize their tabs as well. Opera’s AI can pin, close, and group tabs. This AI can even make bookmarks for the users. This makes organizing tabs less of a hassle and more convenient for the users.

Tab Commands are available for use in the Developer version of the Opera Browser. The AI behind this feature uses only the prompts provided and no other data is processed. This ensures both the security and the privacy of the users. The browser AI does not receive any information about the tabs except for the action they are meant to perform.

Tab Commands: How to use this feature

Opera states that there are two methods of accessing the Tabs Commands feature. Users can access this feature by enabling the Command Line which lets the users type in their Prompts. The users will simply have to let Aria know what it has to do and Aria follows through. When a user right-clicks a tab and then chooses the AI Tab Management option, they are presented with three choices such as “Close old tabs”, “Gourp my tabs”, and “Save my session”.

Image Credits: Screenshot Taken From Opera Browser

Aria also gives the users a recap of the action that was performed. It also gives users the choice of whether or not to undo the action or keep them. This is particularly useful when a user accidentally prompts Aria to close a tab that was not supposed to be closed.

swsh, a social media app launched in 2023, has undergone a whole new revamp. When the app debuted last year, it was originally designed as a fun app where people can play pool games with each other. However, the app has recently decided to change its whole premise while maintaining the Gen Z essence.

The app first started as an ‘icebreaker’ game app that friends can play to connect, whether in person or virtually. Users could answer up to five questions about and along with their friends. Points and Superlatives are collected based on the amount of votes they earn. The co-founder and CEO of swsh, Alexandra Debow stated that the app’s polling system was powered by ChatGPT. Weilyn Chong is the other co-founder and she is also the COO, while Nathan Ahn serves as the company’s CTO.

Now fast forward to the current year, the company has diverted the app into a shared photo album app. Although there are plenty of apps that fit this description, the company’s Gen Z features could make it stand out from the crowd. For Instance, users will be able to filter and replace Solo cups and other alcoholic drinks. This is a useful tool, particularly for young people who want to keep that side of them hidden. Additionally, users can also hide specific pictures. For instance, users can send in requests to other people if the user appears to be in an intoxicated state or they’re somewhere they’re not supposed to be.

swsh: More features of this app

Users can also find pictures of themselves from a collection of pictures with the help of the in-built AI facial recognition. Furthermore, the users can also choose if they want other people to view their images.

With the relaunch of swsh in February, the app also brought in a new tagging system that enabled users to allocate names to different faces which makes it easier to search. So when users don’t recall the name of a person from their college, they can just go through their saved tagged names.

X is unbanned in Brazil after the platform paid over 28 million reais and a newly appointed local representative. The site is now operational in Brazil once again.

Brazil being one of X’s largest markets in the world, it is no wonder that X did not want to let go of the country indefinitely. There is an estimate of around 22 million X users in Brazil alone. The loss of Brazillian users on X also meant more traffic for other sites like Bluesky and Tumblr. Bluesky had logged in a record-high number of new accounts ever since X was banned in Brazil.

This ban came as a result of a legal battle between Moraes and X. Moraes had claimed that X was enabling disinformation to take place by disagreeing to ban certain profiles that were spreading false information about Brazil’s Presidential election in 2022. Musk did not see kindly to this and he fired back and called out Moraes for abusing his power and violating free speech.

Moraes had demanded that the platform should appoint a legal representative in Brazil and suspend the accounts of those spreading disinformation. However, X did not comply. But strangely enough, X later went back on this and revealed the identities of the guilty accounts.

Later on, Brazil demanded a fee of 28 million reais if the platform wanted to reinstate itself into the country. And by the looks of it, the fine has been paid. A legal representative in Brazil was also named as per the requirements made by the country. Anatel is responsible for ensuring that X returns to Brazil and its 20 million followers in 24 hours.

Google has begun rolling out a feature which came as a result of SpotHero integration with Google Maps and Search. With this feature, users will be able to find and book their parking sports right from the platform itself.

SpotHero is a startup designed to let drivers save closeby parking spots. Users will now be able to find parking spaces at their destination as well as reserve it. The user will first have to enable the ‘Book Online’ options on the two apps. Once this has been enabled, the users will then be directed to SpotHero’s website to confirm their booking. This can be done without leaving Google Maps or Search.

This integration has been under testing since April. So after a month-long wait of testing, Google has finally begun rolling out its feature for all users in Canada and the US. As of now, SpotHero covers over 8,000 spots across more than 300 cities in the two countries. Some of the more popular locations where users can use this feature for parking are SAP Centre and Madison Square Garden.

The SpotHero integration also provides options to find better locations that provide places with valet services, wheelchair accessibility, and EV charging. With no parking reservation feature of its own, Google’s collaboration with SpotHero comes at the right time. It has been noticed that Google has been adding more and more functionality features to ensure that people continue using Google Maps.

SpotHero is used worldwide by people and this integration will expand its customer base. The company has even claimed that more than 10 million drivers in the US, The startup has claimed to have gained around $1.5 billion from the total amount. This parking feature has already been introduced in Apple Maps back in 2023.

SPILL was launched back in January 2023 and it acts as a sort of safe community for minority communities. This app came after Alphonso Terrel and DeVaris Brown were let go by X as employees. So the duo came up with an app that would protect and enforce serious measures for more marginalised communities.

It is a visual app so it is more photo and gif-focused. Users can also post texts along with images, GIFs and videos with their followers. The users take an image and add a funny caption to the image, driving the meme aspect of the app. A new post is called a ‘spill’. The ‘spill board’ shows the top 10 hottest spills. The posts are presented in reverse chronological format but it also contains horizontal and vertical scrolls as well.

Users can also earn money through a viral post on SPILL. The app makes sure that every creator gets proper credit for their posts. The users’ posts are also being tracked with blockchain technology to keep a proper record of where the posts came from.

SPILL: More on this Black-owned startup

SPILL’s anti-harassment tools are trained to find harmful content as well ell as hate speech, The app prides itself for acting as a safe space for minority groups to gather online.

This innovative app has just recently received an investment by American actress, Kerry Washington. She states that SPILL stands out in a digital world where minority communities particularly LGBTQ+ and Black and Brown people are neglected and hardly prioritized.

Besides securing a new angel investor in the form of Washington, this app has also found success with the launch of its new Spades game. Spades is a multiplayer game that was inspired and suggested by the black community as it was always played at barbeques and family gatherings.
